The steamship Kotuku was built for J.C. Firth in 1878 by Staffordshire Iron Works. It was designed to carry cargo between Auckland and Stanley Landing on the Waihou River in Matamata. She could carry 50 tons of cargo & 10 tons of coal for the boilers. She was 83 feet long by 20 feet wide with a very shallow draught so that she could navigate the shoals of the Waihou River. Her hull is buried in the reclaimation works under the Chelsea Sugar Factory in Auckland
