About this object
Large Clam shell with painting on the inside surface of a Pacific Island theme. The sun sets on the edge of an island with coconut palms and a traditional hut in the foreground. A ship approaches to the right. Beneath the picture are the words: THE PR---, THE PACIFIC OCAN / UPOLU 1916.
Subject and Association Description
In Jan 1915 Walter Bithell was accepted for military service in Samoa. As Upolu is the main island of Samoa, it is likely this shell was brought back as a souvenir of his time there.
