About this object
Presented to Joseph Gordon Coates who was Prime Minister of New Zealand in 1925. This cloak or korowai is made from cotton, wool, flax and feathers. The bottom hem and sides are attached seperatley and woven flax, these are decorated with a taniko pattern in white and modern dyed black. The main part of the cloak is made from a heavy cotton cord with three panels of red wool pattern taniko. The rest of the area is covered with two types of brown feathers, which are possibly ostrich. Donor is the eldest grandson of Coates.
