About this object
Dress coat with tails from the family of Gordon Coates, New Zealand’s Prime Minister from 1925-28. Part of white tie dress, made from black barathea, waist length in the front and sides, and has two long tails reaching to the knees in back. The lapels have facings in silk satin, with the outer edge in barathea. Double breasted, worn without being done up. Fully lined and quilted around underarms and chest with black satin silk, with white striped cotton for the inside of the arms. Slit pockets are at left inside breast, inside right backside tail, two large pockets are in outside tails, with the corners at top of split decorated with a covered button each.
