About this object
Black silk taffeta and velvet jacket and skirt c.1870's. This ensemble belonged to Eleanor Coates (née Aickin b.1851-d.1934) who was married to Edward Coates (b.1843-d.1905) in 1877. 1. Jacket, made from black silk taffeta and lined with polished cotton. Fitted bodice with darts in front and boning on the inside. Back is fitted with three panels, curving out from small waist into a fish tail. Trimmed with dark blue-black velvet at hem of jacket, back seams, at wrist cuffs and covering eight covered buttons down centre front opening and two at centre back waist. Hem and cuffs are decorated with pleated taffeta frills. Turnback collar at neck decorated with a cream lace collar with butterflys in the corner. 2. Skirt, made from same black silk taffeta, lined with polished cotton, side hidden pocket at one seam. Very full skirt with a large train at back, held together inside with ties at back. Plain black cotton waistband, closed at back placket with two metal hooks and eyes. Decorated on front with pleated rows in a drape formation from thigh to hem six in total, with a whole scallop in front with a half each side. Where each scallop join there is a velvet half bow, in total there are three each side. This pattern meets back pattern at sides, which is a large petal shape of pleated ribbon which starts at waist, and borders train to hem with a second frill joining at hem also. Skirt has cotton tape ribbon attached at train back and waist as to be able to lift train at times. Hem edge has a pleated heavy cotton grosgrain cotton fabric frill.
