About this object
Black taffeta skirt c. late 19th Century. Gored and pleated onto waist band. Band has a black tape stitched to outside which ties at back placket, which also is fastened with two sets of hooks and eyes. Hemline is bound with black velvet ribbon and six inches above this is three rows of the same ribbon. Lining is of cotton fabric for the upper half, and the lower section a brown cotton fabric which is treated with something, possibly to waterproof or repel dirt. A hidden pocket is on right thigh, which is lined with the same brown cotton.
